Speech at MIT
In June 2013, MIT invited Drew Houston as a speaker and he delivered there a wonderful speech. He said, “You’re the average of the five people you spend the most time with think about this for a minute, who would be in your circle of five? If i wouldn’t have the good circle so i wouldn’t have met the amazing co-founder of Dropbox Arash so there would be no Dropbox”. Drew Houston added to this, “I have learned one thing that is surrounding yourself with inspiring people is now just as important as being talented or working hard. Can you imagine if Michael Jordan hadn’t been for NBA, if his circle of five had been bunch of guys in Italy? Your circle pushes you to be better, just as my friends pushed me.
Drew Houston made Dropbox when he was just 24 years old and now he is the #1999 richest man in the world according to Forbes and he was #18 America’s Richest Entrepreneurs under 40 in 2016. He said to be successful you have to maximize your rate of learning; pick opportunities that will push you and surround you with the most talented people.
His four favorite books are:
“High output Management” by Andy Grove.
“On the paranoid survive: How to exploit the crisis point that challenge every company” by Andy Grove.
“Playing to win : How strategy really works” by A.G. Lafley and Roger L. Martin
“The score take cares of itself : My philosophy of leadership” by Bill Walsh, Steve Jamson and Craig walsh.
The road to become billionaire was not that much smooth. The original domain they bought was getdropbox.com because Dropbox was taken and owner don’t want to sell it. After they launched the startup he put google adsense to cash in the opportunity because many customers go by mistake to dropbox.com. So Drew Houston and Arash filed a case against him and settle the lawsuit for $300K and Drew also offered him the shares of Dropbox but he rejected which is worth millions of dollars.
He said I wasn’t try to make a billion dollar company. I tried to solve the problem but in the journey many people said they are too much dumb and mad. If this is possible and have some potential so why Google and Microsoft are not doing so. He added you have to have both thick and thin skin. If you ignore all you will miss the important information which will help you to improve a lot. But you must not give attention to all you must know what to listen.
Drew Houston said the more i learned about the mechanics of starting a company the more I realized I didn’t know about business. So what did he do? Drew bought the highest read books on Amazon on the sales, business and marketing. The most memorable according to him was Emotional Intelligence. He read alot of them like Getting to Yes, The Innovator’s Dilemma etc.
His belief is:
The idea of life unfolding infinitely in front of you is not really true. Make everyday count. Think about life as an adventure or story not a check list. Make a story that’s interesting as opposed to trying to be perfect.
Conclusion: “Write an interesting story not perfect story.”
The hardest part about being a CEO is managing your psychology from The Hard Thing about Hard Things. According to us the Drew has the best psychology we have ever seen. That’s make him the different from the world. So, there’s a right saying “Winners don’t do different things they do the things differently”.
